Frequently Asked Questions
Are you currently accepting new patients?
Yes! Please contact me by calling (231) 631-7517 or by filling out the contact form to make an initial appointment or ask questions.
Do you accept insurance?
You should check with your health insurance company to see what behavioral health services are covered under your plan. I currently accept: Blue Cross Blue Shield, Blue Care Network, Aetna, Cigna/EverNorth, and United Behavioral Health.
If you are covered by a different insurance company, I am considered an out-of-network provider. I will provide you with the information needed to submit for reimbursement from your insurer.
What happens at the beginning of therapy?
During the first session, I will ask questions in order to understand your concerns, symptoms, and needs and develop a treatment plan. At the end of the session, I will provide my initial assessment and treatment recommendations.
You will also be given an opportunity to ask me questions about my treatment approach, credentials, and areas of expertise. It is important for anyone entering psychotherapy to gauge his or her general comfort level and trust to determine whether or not the therapist is a good fit.
How often will I meet with you?
In order for psychotherapy to be effective, consistency and predictability are important. For the duration of treatment, patients are expected to meet with the therapist once weekly, unless otherwise indicated. It is best to meet at the same time every week.
Do you meet with patients in-person or via Telehealth?
Both. I prefer in-person, but I can meet by Telehealth as well.
How long does therapy last?
For some patients, short-term treatment of a few sessions can help achieve symptom relief. For others, therapy is a longer-term process that may last several months. The length of treatment depends on each person’s individual needs.
Do you prescribe medication?
I do not prescribe medication. However, psychiatric medication can often enhance and reinforce gains made in psychotherapy. When indicated, I can provide a referral to a psychiatrist to assess the need for medication.
Do you treat all mental health issues?
I have training and experience in treating a wide variety of psychological issues. Please note, however, that certain mental health conditions may require a higher or different level of care than outpatient psychotherapy alone can adequately provide. Certain conditions may also fall out of the scope of my areas of expertise. In such cases, I will try to provide referrals to appropriate providers. Please call to inquire about my services to see if I am the right fit for you.
Is therapy only for people who have been diagnosed with a severe mental illness?
No. Many people benefit from therapy because it offers a safe space to talk about the complexities of life. Stress, anxiety, and sadness are part of the human condition. It is okay to acknowledge when such issues may be interfering with quality of life and, if necessary, to ask a therapist for help.
Do you offer couples therapy?
Not at this time. However, I am happy to make referrals to providers who do offer this service.
Do you offer psychological testing?
